Backblaze has led the way in cloud backup for years. Offering one of the best online backup based solutions keeping your data safe & secure in the event of a data loss disaster.

Providing unlimited backups with no limitations you can ensure that any computer that has Backblaze installed is secured & have peace of mind knowing no matter the incident your data from photos to documents can easily be restored.

How it works:

Backblaze is a cross-platform utility that runs in the background & runs a full backup of your drives that you designate. All of this is backed up online versus to traditional hard drive. Online backup means the point of failure is reduced & your data is off-site in the event of a hard drive crash, natural disaster, etc.

No need to pick specific files or folders simply designate the drive & that’s it. Backblaze achieves this through its unlimited file backup solution.

Unlike competitors, Backblaze simply backs up everything. The incremental sync looks at your last backup & sees any file changes & updates to the latest copy to ensure your always up to date. Since there are no plans for storage & your backup is unlimited you never have to worry.

However, for those who do want advanced options, Backblaze does offer other options for you tweak the backup schedule, type, and even exclusions if there are certain files/folders you don’t want to take back up.

Backing up, however, is just part one of how Backblaze works. In the event your computer crashes, the drive fails, or you simply misplace an important file you’ll need to then restore.

Restoring is as simple as logging into the web dashboard & navigating to the file you want to restore. You then have multiple options for digitally downloading the file or even having Backblaze send out a USB or full on the drive for you to recover your data.

Highly useful for when you're trying to restore an entire drive for example, simply pay for the drive to keep it or recover the data & send it back for a refund.

Backblaze features

Online backup is highly effective in comparison to let's say an external drive you may have. Where a backup drive or external can fail the idea behind online backup is your data is stored off-site on servers.

Your data is always protected, secured, and stored away from potential damage. Let’s say your computer crashed, got stolen, or any other scenario where physical damage could affect your drive. Through cloud backup, you don’t have to worry about any of that.

Furthermore compared to other services Backblaze really is beneficial in its ability to support all file types, no size limits, and unlimited overall backup. Meaning whatever you have to backup Backblaze can support it.

That alongside its other host of features such as physical drive restore options, encryption backup, ability to locate a stolen computer remotely through Backblaze are but a few of the other benefits.

My Experience with Backblaze

In testing Backblaze for over 2 weeks I can say its a league of its own when it comes to online backup in every aspect. The ease of installation & setup is probably most notable. Upon install, it analyzes your main drives & sets them for backup. While you have the options to further designate or even remove drives depending on your situation it's a nice touch.

The unlimited storage offered within Backblaze not only simplifies the service plan overall but provides peace of mind knowing no matter how much data you accumulate Backblaze will handle it.

I had it set to backup my main drive over the two weeks of testing & while the initial backup takes some time depending on your amount of data + network speed following that everything ran flawlessly.

I scheduled my backups accordingly & never really noticed any slowdown in my machine or the app taking a ton of my system resources.

Backblaze preferences

It’s by far the easiest to use the backup solution I’ve tested. The advanced settings, however, are a great addition for those who want to really control different aspects. You can add file exclusions so it doesn’t backup certain data, encrypt your backups for security, and even limit the bandwidth so you don’t exceed upload limits with your ISP.

The other half of the app as far as restoring goes is equally as easy. You can simply navigate through their web interface (which I do wish was more integrated into the app) in order to restore files as needed.

You have a couple options when restoring. Backblaze allows you to simply download files you need to restore, order a USB drive, or a full on the hard drive for restoration. These hardware options are great in the event you need access to a ton of data at once. From there you can pay to keep the hardware or send it back after retrieving said data.

All in all, backing up & restoring was a breeze with Backblaze where I didn’t have to worry about the particulars or details & app handled it all itself.

My Personal Thought about the Software

Features

Backblaze while simple at the surface offers so many advanced settings for you to control how you backup, frequency, type, and so much more.

Price

At its price point, it can’t be beaten. $5 monthly is nothing when it comes to having your data securely stored.

Ease of Use

Another category Backblaze simply excels in. Install, backup, restore as needed.

What is the Price of the Software?

Backblaze is not only one of the best cloud backup options but also offers the best bang for the buck. Starting at $5 you can backup an entire machine regardless of file size or how much data you have.

More machines, however, are additional costs & yearly plans offer some discounts. However, outside of that Backblaze keeps it simple no tiered plans or additional costs for data on the personal backup side of things.

What Others are Saying

“You will sleep much better knowing that you have Backblaze” –John Gruber of DaringFireball

“Backblaze is a true set-it-and-forget-it online backup service. It's good for novices, but it may frustrate expert users who want more granular controls.” – PC Mag

Verdict and Conclusion:

At the end of the day, Backblaze is as simple & yet sophisticated as it gets. A true install, setup, forget solution to backing up. Online backup is a necessity nowadays given the amount of data we store on our computers.

Off-site backup is the truest form of protecting your data & Backblaze executes it perfectly. Offering a true unlimited backup experience where you as the user don’t have to interact much with the app.

However, given the event disaster strikes & you do need to restore your data Backblaze also has you covered. Restore files easily digitally or have the company send you out a drive to get back up running. Your data is crucial & you should have an equally efficient system to back it all up. Backblaze is that solution.
