Normally blu-ray players won't play MKV files from blu-ray or DVD disc. However you can convert MKV file created by MakeMKV to a format playable by any blu-ray player. The conversion is fast and MKV file itself can come from blu-ray disc or DVD disc (or even HD-DVD disc). The trick is to transcode MKV file into AVCHD disc files - nearly all blu-ray players play AVCHD discs from BD discs, most play AVCHD recorded on DVD_R and some player, including PS3, can play AVCHD files from external USB drive without the need to burn any media. There are at least two freeware programs that you can use to transcode MKV into AVCHD.

Unlike DVD, on Blu-ray, each subtitle item has an attribute that specified whether particular subtitle appearance should be forced. Forced subtitles are shown regardless of current player setting, typically when movie contains a foreign language scene. The "forced" attribute is assigned per individual subtitle image, so entire subtitle track must be scanned to determine if forced subtitles are present.
MakeMKV creates two items for each blu-ray subtitle track in selection screen - regular track and "forced only" as indicated on this example. 
In produced MKV file regular subtitle track will contain all subtitles and forced track will contain only these with forced flag. If entire original track is forced then both tracks will be identical. If no forced subtitles were in original track, the resulting "forced" track will be empty and will not be present in MKV at all.

MakeMKV can process an incomplete or a non-decrypted blu-ray disc backup as long as volume key is known for that disc. Incomplete backup is an encrypted backup without a volume id part, the most common case being ISO image from PS3 system or files plainly copied from blu-ray disc. In order to open such disc a disc-specific key must be supplied to MakeMKV via text file in MakeMKV data directory. First, you need to look up or set "MakeMKV data directory" in preferences; then you need to put a keyfile with disc for your key into this directory. MakeMKV will scan all files in this directory and will accept key in any format. Group of volunteers maintains a decent key database at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120988 . Be sure to download the latest keydb_bd file and unpack it into MakeMKV data directory.

MakeMKV supports all commercial Blu-ray discs protected by latest versions of AACS and BD+. Occasionally, when movie studios update AACS and BD+ versions, a new version of MakeMKV needs to be downloaded. For the entire history of MakeMKV, the program was always updated next day after or days before the release date of disc employing new protection.

MakeMKV can't stream to XBOX and there are two reasons for that. Reason #1 is that Xbox requires proprietary extensions for UPnP protocol and MakeMKV currently doesn't implement such extensions. The second and most important reason is that Xbox can't play video with blu-ray bitrates, can't play most blu-ray audio formats and will not display blu-ray subtitles so it is a pretty useless client for blu-ray streaming.

MakeMKV supports web-based streaming and UPnP streaming. For NMT-based devices MakeMKV uses Syabas myiBox protocol extensions for web streaming. Because most NMT devices are also UPnP clients you will see MakeMKV media server as two items. Be sure to select "myiBox" item and not UPnP item, since most video formats are not supported in NMT UPnP client. If for some reason MakeMKV server is not discoverd by your device, try navigating to http://addressofpc:51000/s.html from your device.

MakeMKV doesnt create a menu item (yet) for its self when you install it. This is a simple way to manually make one. This will work for Gnome/KDE/Xfce.

I like nano, but of course use the editor of your choice.

You can put the icon in /usr/share/pixmaps or /usr/share/icons or wherever you want.

MakeMKV can create a decrypted backup of a Blu-ray disc on a hard drive. Decrypted backup will contain all files from original disc but M2TS files will be decrypted (both AACS and BD+ will be removed). These files can be processed by variety of free software such as BD rebuilder, tsMuxER, MultiAVCHD to name a few, or played by most players.

In order to create backup, launch MakeMKV, select desired drive on main screen in "Source" box and press "backup" icon on a toolbar or select "Backup" from file menu. Be sure to select "decrypt video files" on the next dialog.

Note - backup menu is disabled after disc is opened and title selection menu is present, you need to use backup from main menu or close the disc by selecting "Close" in "File" menu.
